Northstowe Phase 2, Cambridge

FK Lowry have successfully delivered a £125,000 Rotary Bored Piling Scheme for Principal Contractor, Sisk. The piling sub-contract was for the design and installation of 24 No 600mm Dia. Bearing Piles up to 27m deep for the construction of highways and infrastructure works at the Northstowe new town in Cambridgeshire.

Northstowe is set to be the UK's biggest new town since Milton Keynes where eventually up to 10,000 new homes are planned. The site is the former RAF Oakington air base.

Sisk’s contract included demolition and remediation of a disused sewage treatment works and the treatment of contaminated ground. Sisk will also build approximately 5km of roads. FK Lowry mobilised their dual-purpose Soilmec SR-75 Piling Rig to install 700mm OD Temporary casing to provide 600mm dia. Rotary bearing piles for a new bridge structure on the project. The ground conditions were described as Made Ground overlying granular river terrace deposits before encountering stiff to very stiff Clays at depth. The cohesive deposits also included lenses of strong Siltstones that required to be overcome with the use of the correct tooling to ensure that piles were bored to design toe levels.

FK Lowry completed the Contract Safely, on programme and to budget.
