FK Lowry has recently completed a £1.35 million contract at a new Tesco superstore in Newtownards, Northern Ireland. The superstore comprises of retail units, drive through restaurant, petrol station and a car park. FK Lowry was awarded the contract by Principal Contractors McLaughlin and Harvey.
Due to the tight programme FK Lowry used three rigs to achieve the required outputs. Two Junttan PM 20 rigs were used as well as our Junttan 1830, this rig is normally used in CFA mode but for this contract the plant department converted it to driven mode and it supplemented the other two rigs. The works involved the placement of 2950 precast piles (270mm x 270mm) which were produced at our Pond Park manufacturing site. The piles were driven to between 19 and 23 metres. A complete compliment of static load testing and dynamic case testing was carried out to a White Young Green specification.
To demonstrate the size of this contract – if each pile was laid head to toe – this would equate to a total length of 38.5 miles which is equivalent to distance from Belfast to Newry!
The site team were given a challenging programme and managed to meet the required handover dates. The first phase of the contract was completed between April and July 2011 with the final phase fully completed in September 2011.
Well done to the all the team for winning the work, manufacturing and delivering the piles and installing the piles on this successful contract.
